Sudarshan Kriya Workshop: An Inspirational Experience

Last weekend, I attended The Art of Living Part One Workshop in Stittsville, Ottawa, which was an inspiring experience. During the workshop, I learned effective breathing techniques and practical advice for everyday life. I also experienced Sudarshan Kriya, a rhythmic breathing practice that science shows can reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and promote overall well-being.

In this blog, I will first share my journey and key takeaways from the workshop. I will also discuss the benefits of Sudarshan Kriya, which are backed by scientific research. Whether you are new to breathwork or have been practicing for a while, this article will provide valuable insights into how this practice can change your life.

Why I Chose The Art of Living Workshop

Like many people, I’ve struggled with stress and anxiety due to the constant rush of modern life. Despite trying various wellness practices, I felt something was missing—a deeper connection to my breath and inner peace. I was intrigued when I heard about The Art of Living Workshop while listening to Dr. Ruscio’s podcast. Founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, this program combines ancient yogic techniques with modern science to help individuals lead happier, healthier lives.

The workshop promised theoretical knowledge and practical tools for managing emotions, improving focus, and cultivating joy. It delivered beyond my expectations.

The Structure of the Workshop

The Part One Workshop spanned three days, each day building on the previous one with new techniques and insights. Here’s a breakdown of what we covered:

Day 1: Introduction to Breath & Mind Connection

We began with an introduction to the power of breath. Most of us breathe unconsciously, but how we breathe directly impacts our mental and emotional state. Our instructors, Joanna and Jane, explained how shallow breathing keeps us in a state of stress, while deep, rhythmic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation.

We practiced Ujjayi Pranayama (Victorious Breath), a calming technique that helps regulate emotions. By the end of the session, I had already felt lighter and more centred.

Day 2: The Science of Sudarshan Kriya

Above all, the workshop’s highlight was learning Sudarshan Kriya (SKY), a unique breathing technique that involves cyclical breathing patterns—slow, medium, and fast. This practice is designed to release stress, detoxify the body, and restore mental balance.

During the session, our instructors guided us through the steps, ensuring we understood the rhythm and purpose of each phase. Maintaining the pace felt challenging during the practice, but I experienced an incredible sense of release and clarity as I continued.

Day 3: Integration & Daily Practice

Most importantly, on the final day, we discussed incorporating these techniques into daily life. We also explored meditation, yoga postures, and wisdom talks on managing emotions and cultivating gratitude. Above all, The sense of community was profound—everyone shared their experiences, and the collective energy was uplifting.

The Science Behind Sudarshan Kriya: What Research Says

Undoubtedly, one of the most compelling aspects of this workshop was discovering the scientific validation behind Sudarshan Kriya. Numerous studies highlight its mental and physical health benefits.

1. Reduces Stress & Anxiety

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that Sudarshan Kriya significantly reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and alleviates symptoms of anxiety and depression (Brown & Gerbarg, 2005). The rhythmic breathing calms the amygdala, the brain’s fear center, and, as a result, promotes emotional stability.

2. Enhances Mental Clarity & Focus

Research in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience (2018) showed that SKY practitioners experienced significantly improved cognitive function and attention span. Moreover, the technique increases brain oxygenation, enhancing mental alertness and decision-making.

3. Boosts Immunity & Detoxification

A study in the International Journal of Yoga (2013) revealed that the regular practice of Sudarshan Kriya significantly strengthens immune function by increasing natural killer cell activity. Deep breathing also helps flush out toxins, improving overall vitality.

4. Improves Emotional Well-Being

According to the AMA Journal of Ethics, breathwork like SKY can reduce symptoms of PTSD and improve emotional resilience (Seppälä EM et al., 2014). Specifically, participants reported greater happiness, reduced mood swings, and more profound inner peace.

My Transformation

After just three days and 5 days of home practice, I noticed profound shifts in my mindset and energy levels:

  • Better Stress Management – Instead of reacting impulsively to challenges, I now pause and breathe, allowing me to respond calmly.
  • Deeper Sleep – I’ve been falling asleep faster.
  • Stronger Mind-Body Connection – I’m more aware of my breath throughout the day, which keeps me grounded.

Final Thoughts: Is This Workshop Worth It?

Absolutely. The Art of Living Part One Workshop is more than just a course—it’s a toolkit for life. Whether you’re dealing with stress, seeking mental clarity, or simply wanting to live more mindfully, these techniques offer tangible benefits backed by science.

If you’re curious, I highly recommend giving it a try. The best part? The effects compound with regular practice. Since the workshop, I’ve continued with daily Sudarshan Kriya, and the benefits keep growing.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my journey, where I’ll explore advanced techniques and long-term impacts!
