What Is Applied Kinesiology & ART Testing?
Applied Kinesiology (AK) and Autonomic Response Testing (ART) are gentle forms of muscle testing that help us listen to your nervous system. In Ottawa, AK and ART testing offer valuable insights into your body’s needs.

Instead of guessing what your body needs, muscle testing gives us real-time feedback about:
- Hidden physical stressors (old injuries, scars, posture patterns)
- Triggers in your environment (mould, chemicals, foods, infections)
- Emotional and trauma-related stress is stored in the body
- How your gut, immune system, and brain might be interacting
In my practice at Capital Osteopathy in Ottawa, AK and ART testing are never used on their own. They are always combined with gentle osteopathy, trauma-release work, and, when appropriate, functional medicine insights.

How Muscle Testing Works in a Session
During a session, I gently test how a specific muscle responds to light pressure while introducing different “inputs” to your system, for example:
- Touching specific acupressure or reflex points
- Moving a joint or part of the spine
- Placing a hand over areas such as the gut, liver, or jaw
- Introducing emotional or trauma-related themes
- Sometimes, introducing test vials or items (e.g. foods, supplements) when appropriate
When your nervous system is stressed, the muscle often temporarily weakens. When the stressor is reduced or balanced, the muscle stays strong.
This gives us a map of:
- What your body finds stressful
- What is currently overwhelming your nervous system
- Where we may need to focus treatment first
You remain fully clothed, and the testing is gentle, respectful, and paced to your comfort, especially if you have a history of trauma or nervous system overwhelm. You can read more about my nervous-system-focused approach on the Work With Adults and Work With Children & Teens pages.
What Applied Kinesiology & ART Can Help Explore
AK and ART do not diagnose diseases. Instead, they help us explore patterns such as:
- Chronic pain (neck, back, jaw, shoulders, hips)
- Headaches and migraines
- Persistent fatigue or burnout
- Anxiety, overwhelm, and freeze responses
- Gut symptoms (bloating, loose stools, constipation, food reactions)
- Hormonal and stress-related symptoms
- Subtle responses to mould, chemicals, or foods
- Residual effects of past injuries, surgeries, or dental work
- The way emotional stress or trauma shows up in the body
When combined with Trauma-Release Osteopathy and Gentle Osteopathy for Pain, ART and AK muscle testing with my Ottawa clients can help us understand why your symptoms persist, not just where they are.

My Approach: Gentle, Trauma-Informed, and Integrative
Many people in Ottawa who seek AK and ART testing have:
- Seen multiple practitioners
- “Normal” lab results, but still feel unwell
- Longstanding symptoms that seem to shift from one area of the body to another
- A sense that emotional stress, trauma, or life events are linked to their physical symptoms
My approach is:
- Gentle and non-forceful – no high-velocity adjustments, no cracking
- Trauma-informed – we go at your pace, with permission at every step
- Integrative – combining osteopathy, acupressure, nervous system regulation, and functional medicine insights when needed
- Collaborative – you are always fully involved in decisions and options

What to Expect in an AK & ART Session
A typical session may include:
- Listening to Your Story
We begin by understanding your primary concerns, past events, and any patterns you’ve noticed. This is especially important if you have chronic pain, trauma history, or complex symptoms. - Gentle Assessment
We may assess posture, breathing, areas of tension, and how your nervous system responds to simple movements or stimuli. - Muscle Testing (AK & ART)
Using specific muscles, I test how your body responds to different inputs. This helps us identify key stressors and priorities. - Treatment
Treatment may include:- Gentle osteopathic techniques
- Acupressure and reflex points
- Trauma-release work and nervous system regulation
- Simple home practices or positioning
- Where appropriate, discussion of nutritional or lifestyle factors
- Next Steps
Together, we decide on a plan that feels realistic and supportive for you.
You can learn more about the overall style of care by visiting the Work With Adults or Work With Children & Teens pages.
Is Applied Kinesiology & ART Right for You?
If you live in Ottawa, AK and ART testing may be a good fit if:
- You feel there is “more going on” than what standard tests are showing
- You suspect trauma, stress, or emotional patterns are part of your symptoms
- You want a gentle, body-based way to explore what’s overwhelming your system
- You prefer a whole-person, root-cause approach rather than chasing single symptoms
If you’re unsure whether this is the right step, you’re welcome to start with a Discovery Session.
This short, no-pressure conversation (in person or via JaneApp video) helps us both see if we’re a good fit and which approach would best support you.
Local, Trauma-Informed AK & ART Testing in Ottawa
My clinics is located in Centretown and North Gower, Ottawa, and I frequently work with people from across the Ottawa region who are dealing with:
- Chronic pain and tension that hasn’t fully resolved
- Nervous system dysregulation, anxiety, and freeze responses
- Gut issues that seem linked to stress or past events
- A long history of “trying everything” without clear answers
Rather than separating the body, mind, and nervous system, we examine how they connect. You can read more about how emotional stress shows up physically in my blog post: Why Emotional Stress Shows Up as Physical Pain — and How Gentle Osteopathy Helps.
Frequently Asked Questions About Applied Kinesiology & ART Testing in Ottawa
1. Is Applied Kinesiology or ART a medical diagnosis?
No. Applied Kinesiology and Autonomic Response Testing do not diagnose medical conditions.
They are tools that help us understand how your nervous system responds to different stressors and where your body may be struggling to adapt. Any medical concerns or diagnoses should always be discussed with your family doctor or relevant specialist. My role is to support your body’s capacity to heal and to work alongside your existing healthcare team.
2. Is muscle testing safe and gentle?
Yes. Muscle testing is very gentle and done with light pressure. You remain fully clothed, and I always check in with your comfort level, especially if you have pain, hypermobility, or a trauma history. If anything feels too much, we slow down, adjust, or stop.
3. Do I need to stop my medications or supplements?
No. You should never stop or change medications without medical supervision.
Muscle testing may sometimes provide information about how your body responds to specific inputs (including supplements), but your prescribing doctor should guide any medication changes. If needed, I am happy to collaborate with your other practitioners.
4. How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person. Some people notice shifts within a few sessions; others with long-standing or complex patterns may need a longer course of care. During your initial appointments, we will discuss:
- Your goals
- How is your body responding
- A plan that feels manageable for you
You’re always in control of how often you come and how far we go.
5. Are AK & ART testing covered by insurance?
Sessions that include AK and ART are booked as osteopathy appointments, so if your extended health benefits cover osteopathic treatment, you may be able to claim part or all of the session. Coverage varies by plan, so it’s best to check directly with your insurance provider.
6. Can children receive muscle testing?
Yes. Children and teens can often respond very well to gentle muscle testing and osteopathic care. Sessions are adapted to their age, attention span, and comfort level. A parent or caregiver is always involved and present.
To learn more about how I work with younger people, visit Work With Children & Teens.
7. I have a trauma history. Will this be too intense?
Many of my clients have a significant trauma history, including medical trauma, emotional neglect, or long-standing anxiety and freeze responses. My approach is:
- Trauma-informed
- Paced and collaborative
- Focused on safety and nervous system regulation, not pushing your body
We go slowly, we pause when needed, and you are always welcome to say “no” or “not today” to any part of the process. You can read more about this on the Trauma-Release Osteopathy page.
