Most of my clients come to me for gentle, trauma-informed osteopathy – and that remains the heart of my work. Sometimes, though, your symptoms are also being driven by gut, immune, hormonal or environmental factors.
This is where I use functional medicine integration: not as a separate program, but as a light, targeted layer that supports your trauma-release osteopathy and Applied Kinesiology & ART testing.
How Functional Medicine Fits Into Your Treatment
In our work together, I may bring in functional medicine tools to help us understand:
- Why your nervous system is stuck in fight, flight or freeze
- Why your gut, immune system or hormones are adding stress to your “threat bucket”
- Why pain, fatigue, anxiety or brain fog keep returning despite good bodywork
You can read more about this in:
- The Threat Bucket: How Stressors Can Impact Your Body
- Functional Freeze: A Hidden Response to Trauma
Functional medicine integration gives us more information, so we can reduce the load on your system while we work hands-on.
What We Might Explore Together
Depending on your story and testing (including ART muscle testing), we may look at:
- Gut health
- Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, IBS
- Food reactions, histamine or sulphur intolerance
- Links between gut inflammation and mood, focus or pain
- See: Gut Health, Trauma & the Nervous System
- Nutrient status
- Key micronutrients that support mood, sleep and stress tolerance
- Nutrient support during antidepressant withdrawal or medication changes
- Environmental and immune stressors
- Possible mould or mycotoxin exposure
- Past infections (including Lyme and co-infections)
- Immune over-activation that may be adding to pain, fatigue or anxiety
- Neurotransmitter and nervous system support
- Why your body stays “on alert” even at rest
- How gentle osteopathy, breath, movement and targeted nutrients can help
- See: Why Emotional Stress Shows Up as Physical Pain — and How Gentle Osteopathy Helps
All of this is always anchored in the bigger picture of your nervous system and trauma story, not just lab numbers.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Most people first see me for hands-on care through:
From there, we may decide together to integrate functional medicine. This can include:
- A deeper case review
Looking at your timeline, past illnesses, medications, environmental exposures and emotional stressors. - Prioritizing stressors with ART and applied kinesiology
Using Autonomic Response Testing to help identify which systems (gut, immune, environmental, emotional) are placing the most load on your body. - Simple, targeted recommendations
- Gentle dietary shifts that are realistic for you
- Focused nutrient support where appropriate
- Strategies to lower your overall “threat bucket” load
- Suggestions that fit with your life, values and nervous system capacity
- Reassessment as we go
We monitor changes in your symptoms, nervous system responses and overall resilience over time.
My Approach to Testing and Supplements
I do not run every possible test or put you on a long list of supplements “just in case.”
Instead, my approach is:
- Targeted testing only when it changes what we do
If testing is unlikely to change our plan, I will say so honestly. - Minimal, carefully chosen supplements
- Only where they truly support your healing
- Re-evaluated as your body changes
- Always integrated with your hands-on treatment and nervous system work
- Lifestyle and the nervous system first
We prioritize your capacity to rest, feel safe, digest, and move — because without that, even the best protocol can feel overwhelming.
What I Don’t Do
To keep expectations clear, functional medicine integration at Capital Osteopathy is not:
- A separate, stand-alone “functional medicine clinic”
- Large, complex protocols with many supplements
- Quick-fix hormone or gut “hacks”
- One-size-fits-all lab panels for every client
Instead, it is a gentle, realistic, collaborative layer that supports your osteopathic care.
If you are looking for a very intensive, high-testing functional medicine program, I may not be the best fit — and I’m happy to say that openly.
Is Functional Medicine Integration Right for You?
It may be helpful if:
- You have chronic symptoms (pain, fatigue, gut issues, anxiety) that haven’t responded fully to manual therapy alone
- You suspect your gut, environment, hormones or past infections are part of the picture
- You want a trauma-informed, nervous-system-aware approach to functional medicine
- You prefer simplicity and clarity over long, complex protocols
If you’re unsure, we can explore this in a Discovery Session first.
Functional Medicine Integration in Ottawa
I offer functional medicine integration as part of my osteopathic practices in Centretown and North Gower.
Many people travel from across the Ottawa region for support with:
- Chronic pain and tension that feels “emotionally loaded”
- Long-standing gut issues with a trauma or stress component
- Persistent fatigue, burnout or freeze responses
- Children and teens with anxiety, gut issues or regulation challenges
You can learn more about my overall approach here:
How to Get Started
Most people begin with a no-pressure Discovery Session to see whether we’re a good fit.
- Learn more or book here: Discovery Session
- Or go directly to booking and contact details: Contact & Booking
During this conversation, we’ll explore:
- Your main concerns and goals
- Whether osteopathy alone is likely enough
- Whether adding functional medicine integration might help us go deeper
From there, you can decide — at your own pace — how you’d like to move forward.
FAQ
Do I have to do functional medicine to work with you?
No. Many people see excellent results with gentle osteopathy and trauma-release work alone. Functional medicine integration is optional and only added if it feels appropriate for you.
Will I need lots of tests and supplements?
Usually not. I aim for the least testing and supplementation needed to support your body. If we feel testing is unlikely to change our plan, I’ll tell you honestly.
Can you work with my existing test results?
Often, yes. If you already have recent blood work or other reports, you’re welcome to bring them. We can review them in the context of your nervous system, trauma history and current symptoms.
Do you work with children using functional medicine?
Yes, where appropriate. For children and teens, I use an exceptionally gentle, family-centred approach and often combine children’s osteopathic care with simple, realistic lifestyle and nutrient support.
